Convert Canon EOS R6 4K H.265 for DaVinci Resolve

The Canon EOS R6 arrived at my home late last week. There is A LOT to like in this new camera. Solid 4K picture up to 60fps. 1080 up to 120fps, non cropped full Frame, internal 10-bit, 4:2:2 recording (H.265, IBP), great Auto Focus in all filming modes. great IBIS, C-Log, HDR PQ, and more. The former captures in H.265 format and is readily imported into DaVinci Rrsolve 16 with no loss in quality. However, theCanon EOS R6captures in .mp4 format which DaVinci Resolve 16 doesn’t recognise. This necessitates a conversion to an acceptable format and this is where I am running into problems. – Snell, Bill”

What is H.265/HEVC?
H.265/HEVC is the latest in a long line of video compression standards. Like its predecessor, H. 264, H.265 essentially offers the same level of picture quality as H. 264, but with more efficient codec, so there’s less data to manage. This video format is created specifically for 8K, 4K and 1080P digital camcorders and cameras including Canon EOS R6, Canon XF 705, Canon EOS R5, GoPro Hero 8, Panasonic HC-X1500, etc.

If you are Canon EOS R6 user. you must be familiar with the 4K H.265 format, because Canon EOS R6 output captured data in H.265. There are an increasing number of professional video editing tools that can work with 4K files natively including Avid Media Composer, Premiere Pro CC, and Vegas Pro 18, etc. But some people find it is not convenient for them to import Canon EOS R6 4K H.265 files to DaVinci Resolve for editing. There are several reasons.

1. If the structure of Canon EOS R6 H.265 files changed, you’ll find impossible to directly import into DaVinci Resolve 17, 16, 15, etc.

2. Since the 4K H.265 format is relatively new, many video editors including the DaVinci Resolve 16 are lacking of native support to it, or are only just starting to add support for this file type.
